AN AMAZING RECOVERY

Mdm Tan Been Seam, an 80 year old patient, has been getting her treatment with Chiropractic Focus Group for the past 2 years.

On her very first visit, our doctors recalls a teary-eyed, Mdm Tan coming into the clinic with an intense pain, a very badly hunched back and a stiff neck as she was unable to lift her head due to the pain she was feeling.

Her family told our doctors that she tried to reduce the pain with painkillers, seeing a TCM, using acupuncture and even physiotherapy but to no avail. Upon seeing her continued pain and discomfort, her family persuaded her to try Chiropractic treatments to reduce the pain. A year later, she walks pain free with a much straighter and healthier back! The process was not easy, but with the dedicated doctor’s chiropractic adjustments, treatment sessions and care, her condition improved greatly over the year.

During the Initial Consultation, your Chiropractor will conduct a detailed medical and systems review to make sure that there are no complications to Chiropractic Treatment. Then there will be a thorough examination and assessment of your spine to identify the condition of your spine, Xrays may be necessary in some cases for a clearer diagnosis. Once the diagnosis is clear, your Chiropractor will give you their best recommendation for care.

Do I need X-ray to receive any treatments?

X-ray is NOT compulsory before any treatments.

How many treatments do I need?

Your treatment sessions will depend on your condition. After the first consultation, our chiropractors will let you know the recommended treatments and the number of sessions you need.

Can patients with osteoporosis get chiropractic care?

Patients with Osteoporosis have low bone density and are at greater risk of bone fractures. Common areas of fractures are the hip, spine and wrist. There are various techniques in Chiropractic that help patients with neuro-musculoskeletal problems, including high velocity, low force adjustments, which are gentle, safe and effective especially for patients with osteoporosis, and also for children.

Before anyone, not just osteoporotic patients begin any kind of Chiropractic care, they will be thoroughly examined and most often than not have an xray taken to rule out existing/ previous fractures and other risks.

Chiropractors also provide nutritional advice, exercises and lifestyle changes to help improve your bone density, reduce risk of falling (especially dangerous for such patients) and strengthen your bones.

More often than not, because osteoporotic patients are fearful of fracturing their bones, they tend to become stiff and this creates alot of tension and discomfort in their spine and body. Chiropractic will be the best treatment to help you.

How can i relieve my back pain at home?

There are so many ways to relieve pain at home I’m not sure where to start. The most important advice I would give would be stop doing whatever is causing you back pain in the first place. Whether it be doing house chores, lifting something off the ground, slouching on the couch the whole day, having proper posture and ergonomics will help you reduce your chance of a stiff back, sprain, disc injury etc.

Some people are confused as to whether to use heat or ice for my sore back. The protocol to follow is cold therapy for injuries less than 48 hours to reduce inflammation and heat therapy after to stimulate blood flow to the site of injury. Having a heat pad provides relief and is very relaxing.

Alot of people think because I have a sore back, I should stay home and rest, but actually, moving is equally important. Going out for a slow walk moving your arms back and forth while enjoying the breeze, or going for a slow swim at the pool are great ways to stretch your body and at the same time keeping your body in shape, which brings me to the last important point;

Keep your weight under control.

I’m experiencing neck and shoulder aches due to long hours in front of the computer. What can I do to release tension in the area?

Before answering this question, it is important to understand that most “shoulder pains” are not actually pain originating from the shoulder but referred from the neck, usually the lower neck.

I know it’s impossible to tell anyone not to spend a third of the day looking down at the computer screen or burying your head in books because that is what most people do everyday, work or study.

I always tell my patients that the only way to prevent pain or injuries, is to preserve the body’s natural structure. For your neck, the spine is curved inwards, otherwise known as a lordosis. So, keeping the neck in a bent position (by bending forward to look down) for long hours is keeping that neck in an unnatural position for a really long time, and that produces a physiological change in the body, which is a reverse curve in the neck.

Whether you’re reading a book or looking at a computer, try to keep the object in a straight line view when your head is at neutral position (when you’re looking straight ahead). Just like a sore back, you can use heat pads to provide relieve, and stretching your neck gently in every direction helps reduce tightness in the muscles along the neck and shoulders.

And remember to stand up, take a short break every 20 minutes. Not just for a healthier neck, but also a healthier you. Getting up and moving around every 20 minutes reduces your risk of other health conditions like cardiovascular diseases, blood clots etc.
